Tips & Tricks
The simple things that make all the difference!
Puppy biting is totally normal—after all, it’s how they explore and play! But those tiny shark teeth sure can hurt. The good news? With a little patience and consistency, you can teach your puppy to play politely and use a softer mouth.
Here are this week’s Tips & Tricks:
👉 Keep Chew Toys Handy
Puppies need something to chew! Keep exciting toys nearby and use them to redirect those little teeth away from your hands, arms, and clothes.
👉 Walk Away When Needed
If your puppy bites during play, simply stand up and step away. They’ll quickly learn that gentle play keeps the fun going, while nipping makes the fun stop. Exercise pens work great here too—just step in or out to create a quick break until your pup calms down.
👉 Practice Gentle Treat Taking
Teach your puppy that treats are for licking, not biting! Try this fun game:
1. Hold a treat in your closed fist.
2. Wait until your puppy stops pawing, licking, or biting.
3. The moment they back off, say “YES!” and reward them.
4. Slowly increase the wait time before rewarding.
With practice, your pup will patiently wait and gently lick treats from your hand—no more accidental finger chomps!
You’ve got this! 🎉 Remember, every bite is a teaching moment, and with consistency, your puppy will learn quickly. For more help, check out our Puppy Biting class inside our membership area. Not a member, you can join here.
